Mommy SOS - Two Naps to One Nap

Aug 15, 2010

Ahhh how I was hoping this day would never come....Why can't Nora sleep from 9 - 11 am and 1 - 3 pm for the rest of her life??!!! I can just imagine it now. When signing her up for her freshmen classes we'd have to work around her nap schedule. Hehehe....right!

Well - we all know she can't keep up that routine. It's been fairly obvious over the past month or so that Nora is ready to switch from two naps to one. But the real question is - how??!!! How do I actually make that happen?

So... that's where ya'll come in! I'd love to hear your wisdom and experience. Tell me how you knew it was time to switch, how you made the switch and any other nuggets of wisdom you'd like to share. Comment below...
Note: Yes - I realize she isn't looking up with her sweet Nora smile in these photos. She's much too busy for that these days. So for now we'll have to make due with photos like these :)

Good question! We are still at two naps...have tried one but she gets way too crabby! :) will be interested to hear what other moms have to say...

Hadn't had to do that yet, either as my 2 year old still loves two naps and my 6 month old of course does as well! Honestly, though, she is crabby if she doesn't get her two naps or at least a quick one for even 30-45 minutes in the morning. I thought she was going to drop it and occassionally she does, but for the most part, she still likes to lay down around 10-10:30 and sleep for 45 minutes-1 1/2 hours. Then she sleeps from 1-4.
don't think there is any real "secret" persay behind one to two naps, but I would try and have an extended "quiet/Nora time" for her in her crib alone even if she doesn't sleep the entire time in the afternoon. YOu might realize that she is like Bella in that she wants still to have a tad bit of a nap even for 30 minutes in the morning just to keep her mood up through the rest of the day.

Just happy both babies so far have my gene of loving to sleep and not Daddy's!

Oh, this is a tough transition (mainly for Mama)! HA!

I think you know when they are ready when they start fussing ALOT at their normal early bedtime (or maybe the second one), because they aren't tired or ready. Or if you are out and about and nap time gets pushed back- and they are totally fine with it.

For Capri when we switched to one nap it was a few days (maybe even a week) of fussy adjustments. Even when there little bodies are ready for the transition, they are still on a sleep schedule, so it takes them a little longer to adjust, or stay awake (even if they want to). I would suggest having an early nap, between 11 and noon, don't wait any later then that. Some days she won't sleep a long time, and you will need a second to stretch her out until bedtime, but in time she will adjust.
For that week I would suggest getting out of the house (unless she easily falls asleep in the car), but getting out of the house to stretch her out, or giving her some yummy food RIGHT as she would normally lay down. Lots of playtime with Mommy.

I think the most important thing to know is that just like any other time- it's a transition, and you might have a few bad days, and then a few good ones, and eventually it will all even out.

God bless! xo

I'm no expert, but I'd say she'll let you know when she's done with the first nap. It might wind down to just 45 minutes or so before she kicks it all together. I try to savor those morning naps (my personal fav) for as long as I can. I have a feeling they'll be gone before we know it. :)

We've just gone through this transition with my little baby boy. It's not too bad. Probably the first nap as everyone else said will be the one to cut. Then the later nap can be moved up an hour or so.

The good thing is they'll normally get a great afternoon nap or if they happen to take the morning nap, then they'll probably be ready for bed right on time....or a little early even!

Hang in there, you'll get through!

Moral of the story...our babies are growing up too fast, bc we're already down to 1 nap!! :)
